Overview
This injury occurs when the base of the second metatarsal is broken, or when a ligament that connects this metatarsal to one of the cuneiform bones of the midfoot is ruptured.
Causes
LisFranc fracture-dislocations typically occur when the foot is severely twisted, or when a heavy object is dropped on top of the foot. A LisFranc injury may allow bones in the midfoot to shift out of proper alignment.
Symptoms
Symptoms can include severe pain and swelling in the top of the foot, loss of mobility, and bruising. Lisfranc injuries are often mistaken for sprains.
Treatment
Treatment usually requires surgery and physical therapy. In rare cases, surgery may not be necessary - a cast, splint or brace and rest may be all that is needed.
